Dulas and FCSL – powering remote data collection

Dulas, a leader in renewable energy solutions, required robust off-grid power supplies for their core business of wind measurement data collection. This data collection is essential for assessing potential wind farm sites, requiring continuous power in remote and often harsh environments. Dulas turned to FCSL to meet this critical need, utilising a combination of solar power and direct methanol fuel cells to create a sustainable solution.

RPS and Windcube

Challenge

The collection of wind measurement data is crucial for optimizing the siting and specification of wind turbines. This task requires continuous, reliable power in remote and often inaccessible locations where mains electricity is unavailable. Wind data collection equipment, such as Met Masks and LIDAR devices like the Vaisala WindCube, depend on uninterrupted power to function accurately.

Solution

FCSL provided Dulas with EFOY Fuel Cells, which were integrated with solar panels as part of a hybrid power system. This combination was integral to the operation of the WindCube installations, offering several key benefits:

· Reliability: Continuous power supply ensured the accuracy and dependability of wind data collection.

· Durability: The system was designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and required minimal maintenance.

· Sustainability: The use of renewable and sustainable energy sources, such as solar and fuel cells, minimise environmental impact.

Development and expansion of RPS:

Building on the success of their wind measurement applications, Dulas recognised the potential of their RPS technology for a variety of other industries. With funding from Innovate UK, Dulas commissioned Energy Systems Catapult to identify potential markets for their RPS. The resulting report highlighted numerous opportunities across diverse sectors, including:

· Agriculture: Powering remote irrigation systems and data logging equipment.

· Construction: Supporting remote site operations where mains electricity is unavailable.

· Tourism: Providing power for remote lodges and campsites.

· Telecommunications: Ensuring reliable power for rural internet and communication towers.

· Security: Powering surveillance cameras in remote locations and critical infrastructure.

Real world applications

Dulas has already successfully implemented their RPS in several new contexts.

· Water management: For a water utility client, Dulas designed an RPS that controls valves on a remote reservoir, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and reducing operational costs and safety risks.

· Railway safety: on behalf of a national infrastructure client, Dulas created a tool for sizing RPS systems for warning signals at railway crossings. This reliable and cost-effective solution has significant potential to enhance safety across the country.

DuraSource: A complete Remote Solution

The DuraSource system, developed by Dulas, is an all-in-one solution for compact and reliable remote power, ensuring critical applications run seamlessly in the most challenging locations. Key features of the DuraSource system include:

· Flexible power configuration: Tailored to meet specific power needs with customisable AC or DC outputs and various fuel sources, including solar, methanol and wind.

· Weatherproof Design: Built to withstand a wide range of weather conditions, ensuring reliable performance in outdoor and remote environments.

Complex problem-solving:

Designing an effective Remote Power Solution involves more than assembling solar cells and batteries. According to Rachel Munday, Head of Wind Team at Dulas, each solution requires meticulous planning and customisation:

· Power Requirements: Determining whether continuous power or discrete bursts are needed.

· Current Type: Deciding between AC or DC current based on application needs,

· Installation Challenges: Overcoming logistical issues such as lack of vehicular access.

· Environmental Factors: Ensuring the system’s robustness against weather, wildlife and human interference.

Dulas’ partnership with FCSL has resulted in a highly effective off-grid power solution, initially developed for wind measurements and now expanding into various industries. The combination of solar power and fuel cells provides a reliable, durable and sustainable power source for remote applications. As demand for off-grid solutions grow, Dulas is well-positioned to meet the needs of numerous sectors, demonstrating the vast potential and versatility of RPS technology.
