Fuel Cell Systems Ltd Joins British Water to Help Drive Net Zero Across the UK Water Sector

EFOY Fuel Cells for low emission, off-grid power

Fuel Cell Systems Ltd is proud to announce our membership of British Water, the leading trade association representing the UK water industry. This exciting development reflects our commitment to helping essential infrastructure sectors embrace cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.

As the UK’s water companies work toward the ambitious target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030, we are ready to support that transition with our proven fuel cell systems and hydrogen refuelling technologies.

Powering Critical Water Infrastructure with Fuel Cells

The water industry operates vast and varied infrastructure — from booster stations and remote telemetry to chemical dosing units and rural monitoring systems. Many of these assets are in off-grid or hard-to-reach areas, where grid connection is costly or impractical.

Traditionally, these sites have relied on diesel generators, battery swaps, or intermittent renewables to stay online. But these solutions are often carbon-intensive, maintenance-heavy, and vulnerable in poor weather.

At Fuel Cell Systems Ltd, we provide methanol-powered fuel cell systems that deliver clean, reliable, low-maintenance power on water infrastructure sites in the most demanding environments.

Fuel cells are particularly valuable in remote or off-grid settings, where traditional power sources fall short.

Our fuel cells:

  • Automatically top up batteries when solar/wind can’t keep up

  • Operate near-silently and emit only small amounts of water and CO₂

  • Require minimal maintenance and deliver long runtimes

Case in Point: Wessex Water

When Wessex Water needed a more reliable off-grid solution for a rural water tank monitoring site in Wiltshire, they turned to us. We delivered a hybrid fuel cell system that integrated with existing solar and wind power, eliminating the need for costly winter site visits and saving over £3,000 in maintenance.

“Since installation, no site visits have been required. The system just works.”

Supporting Innovation Within British Water

With British Water’s growing focus on decarbonisation, digital resilience, and sustainable innovation, we’re excited to contribute our expertise and collaborate with utilities, consultants, and technology partners to trial clean energy solutions across the UK’s water infrastructure.

“The equipment supporting the UK’s water networks must become cleaner and more resilient — and we know fuel cells can play a big role in that transformation,” said Lee Juby, CEO of Fuel Cell Systems Ltd. “We look forward to working with fellow British Water members to help future-proof the industry.”

Hydrogen Refuelling: Supporting Cleaner Water Utility Fleets

Beyond infrastructure, FCSL also offers mobile and fixed hydrogen refuelling solutions — ideal for helping water utilities transition their vehicle fleets away from fossil fuels.

Whether it is vans used for maintenance teams, HGVs for distribution, or specialist vehicles operating in low-emission zones, our hydrogen refuelling units can support real-world fleet decarbonisation goals.
